Stride thanks the following individuals who have given us their invaluable time and knowledge…

Tanya Navas, Director of Education, Next Steps – Tanya is the raison d’etre that Stride is at Washington Irving High School. A passionate individual who works day in and day out with the students, encouraging and motivating them to achieve their goals. Tanya sits on Stride’s advisory board.

Hogan and Hartson – our dedicated team of lawyers Cheryl David, Scott Friedman and George Hritz for working tirelessly with us to get all the necessary documents together. The hours and commitment they have shown to this project has been inspirational and truly motivating.

And to everybody involved in pulling the event together:

Stride Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit foundation formed to support students in New York City’s most under-funded and underprivileged high schools. Our work is solely supported by the donations of private citizens, keeping our goals clear and succinct. We provide college scholarships to students who show promise and commitment to both their academic pursuit and community.

Stride Foundation’s application for tax-exempt status is pending. The latest… (Stride’s Independence!)

As promised in our email – we have more news about Stride! (for those of you who haven’t received an email from us click here – or in the sidebar of the blog to sign up!)

As you all may remember, STRIDE was working with an organization called Union Square Partnership (USP). This relationship made sense because of their fabulous education program at Washington Irving High School called Next Steps. In order to get our organization off the ground, STRIDE needed the support of USP – not only to have a place to receive donations that were tax exempt but also to receive guidance in the early months. Thanks to all of your generous donations, STRIDE is now in a place where it can become an independent entity. In 2008, STRIDE made the decision to incorporate and begin the process of gaining its own tax-exempt status.

This doesn’t change anything for how STRIDE plans on operating at Washington Irving High School. We look forward to continuing to build a relationship with Next Steps and having STRIDE students fully enjoy the benefits of their program (which is available to all Washington Irving students.)

We hate to bring up Fall with Summer just around the corner, but with Stride’s program starting in September of this year, the excitement is just too much. THE STRIDE PROGRAM

Stride addresses the issue of high school drop out rates in the New York City Public School system at the source, by keeping students in school, and encouraging participation in education beyond graduation. By utilizing an investment/reward approach, Stride requires that selected students participate in community service and internship opportunities throughout their high school years. Every year students participate in Stride, their scholarship incentive grows. After graduating from high school, participants will be awarded scholarships to the college of their achievement, having gained job and life skills along the way. This approach allows students to give back to their communities while investing in their own futures.

In order to combat an alarming percentage of teenage drop-outs, Stride selected Washington Irving High School, located in New York City’s Union Square, to be the first school to benefit from the program. The Washington Irving High School student population grew from 2,400 in 2002-2003 to 3,000 in 2003-2004 due to overflow from other public schools around New York City. Educators blame the overcrowding at Washington Irving for its inability to maintain high attendance or to contain the frequent outbursts of violence in its classrooms and halls. By January 2004, Washington Irving was placed on the list of the city’s most dangerous schools, falling into the category of Impact Schools. Washington Irving was removed from the list in January 2005, after a year of heightened security and extra police officers assigned to the school; however, low attendance and graduation rates remain a critical concern, with just half of the freshman class actually graduating four years later. In 2005 Washington Irving had 1,243 freshmen students enrolled and just 141 seniors. Of those seniors, just a little more than half went on to pursue a 4-year college education. On average, well over 1,000 students get lost in the shuffle between 9th and 12th grade. This is a significant drop in students and typical of a given year at the high school. With such numbers, it is evident that Washington Irving students need incentives to stay in school and to strive for graduation.

In the Fall 2008, Stride will enroll the first five high school freshmen students into the program. Stride leadership will work closely with Washington Irving faculty to determine which students are accepted into the program.

Over the course of the following years, Stride will continue to enroll freshmen students while, simultaneously, working with the upperclassmen already enrolled in the program. Stride’s involvement in the student’s high school career will include:

Encouraging students to maintain an acceptable GPA (to be determined by Washington Irving faculty and Stride leadership,) by staying informed and involved in the student’s day-to-day activities. Stride will also provide each student with a mentor. Stride’s mentors commit to a minimum of one hour per month with their assigned student. Mentors work on a volunteer basis. In the event that a mentor cannot fulfill his or her obligations, Stride will provide an alternate for the student.

Stride will also provide internship opportunities during the summer months. Starting in their transition from 10th to 11th grade, students would be able to apply for internships provided by Stride partners – the businesses and personnel contributing to the program.

Stride requires a minimum amount of community service on entering the 10th Grade. Stride students will develop a volunteer project of their own design, conduct the project throughout the school year, and then report on it, in writing, to the Stride leadership at the end of the year. This project could be continued each subsequent year, or the student can custom-develop their own program each school year until reaching the 12th grade. Regardless of what they choose to do, or how they do it, students must participate in some kind of civic engagement during their 10th and 11th grade years in order to maintain Stride enrollment.

Upon receiving acceptance to an accredited 2 or 4-year college or university, a Stride student will be eligible to receive the promised scholarship. The hope is that their Stride scholarship has underlined their motivation, and has been inspiration throughout their high school career. The amount awarded would be contingent upon Stride funding, on the total amount of funds needed by the student, and on each student’s success in navigating the program. The funds awarded would be given for each year that the student is matriculated at their chosen college or university. Should there be a need, Stride leadership would review specific cases where a student might transfer schools or need to attend part time. By focusing on five students per year, Stride will be able to maintain personal relationships with each of the students. The program’s small size will give the students the attention they need to stay focused and committed to graduating from high school, and to gain acceptance to college, thereby going on to become productive and educated members of their communities.

Stride relies on private donations for all funding. The private donations make it possible for Stride to build a fund that will support the day-to-day operations of the program, as well as provide the promised college scholarship to each of the students enrolled. Stride is operating under Chloe Kaplan, Founder and President and Sabina Breece, Chairperson. Chloe Kaplan and Sabina Breece dedicate 20 hours per week to growing and building the Stride community. This includes organizing the annual fundraisers, pursuing grant and funding opportunities, and marketing. Once the first class of students is accepted into the program in the Fall of 2008, Chloe Kaplan and Sabina Breece, will be directly involved in the students’ progress on a bi-weekly basis. Washington Irving faculty will be asked to notify Stride leadership of any academic issues that may arise with any of the students. Stride’s mentors will also be actively involved in each of the student’s growth throughout their high school career and encouraged to maintain a mentor relationship with the student after graduation.

School failure has many causes. However, the single, most common disadvantage of kids who fail is the lack of traditional support in their immediate communities – family, neighborhood, and school. Historically, poverty in America was overcome by motivated young people. These young people found their incentives in the interlocking networks of adults around them, who cared for them, gave them the encouragement and the help they needed. We still see this in some more cohesive social groups, but it is sadly absent from too many sectors of our society, notably the inner city schools that have become drop-out factories, and the neighborhoods around them that have become concrete jungles of social, economic, and spiritual neglect. The Stride idea is to demonstrate that this culture of despair can be reversed, by showing how communities and students can work together to achieve high school success. Starting extremely small – five students, in one New York City high school, growing to about 40 students over five years and only then branching out toward other high schools, the Stride goal is nonetheless extremely bold and large. If we want to, we can change the meaning of high school for inner-city kids.

Welcome to a New Member of the STRIDE Team!

Hello to all STRIDE friends and supporters! A lot has happened since the last time I checked in with you and there are many updates! Over the next couple of weeks we will be sending you emails with new information about STRIDE, the school and the students and most importantly – our 2nd Annual STRIDE Fundraiser! First and foremost, I would like to announce my partnership with Sabina Breece. As STRIDE continued to grow and evolve I realized there was a need for at least two extra hands and as luck would have it – the perfect 2 have arrived!

Now a note from Sabina:

Like Chloe, I grew up in New York City and have always been well aware of the terrible state of the public school system. The problem became increasingly important to me as I got involved with an organization called “I Have A Dream.” It was there I had the opportunity to tutor a third grade public school student so that she might beat the odds and stay on course with her education. I also got to experience the deplorable condition that these schools are in – the school I worked at didn’t even provide hand soap in the bathrooms! Clearly the need for funding is dire.

Needless to say, I am honored and excited to be a part of Stride – I really believe that it’s a model that could give students the confidence to succeed in a world that might have seemed untouchable.

I look forward to growing Stride with Chloe and being a part of an incredible experience!

Who Do You Know?!?

Hey Everyone – I just sent out an email to the STRIDE email list looking for connections to foundations via board members – we need to raise money from institutions to get the first class on their way to a college education…

STRIDE is counting down the days to the first class of scholarship receiving students in Fall 2008. It may seem like a long way away, but it’s really just around the corner and STRIDE needs your support!

If you or someone you know sits on a board of trustees for a foundation (or handles institutional donations) please send me their information. STRIDE is in the process of writing grants to foundations and if you think you could create a long-term relationship between STRIDE and a foundation that is close to your heart, it would make a world of difference. As you may know, STRIDE’s costs begin and end with the students, with no staff and minimal administrative fees* every dollar STRIDE gains is one more to send a student to college.

* A small percentage of STRIDE’s earnings go to Union Square Partnership for their dedication and commitment in giving STRIDE a home

Our First Fundraiser Success!!!

An enormous thank you to everybody who attended, supported, and enjoyed Stride’s first event on May 20th! It was truly a special and effective event for our budding not-for-profit:

Stride’s first event went off without a hitch! On a day when it was supposed to rain, in a city where people flee to the beaches and countryside at the fist sign of sun, for a program that nobody’s heard of – I have to admit, my nerves nearly got the best of me. And yet, come May 20th, the sun peaked through the clouds, the wine was delivered (thanks to The E.U. – a delicious restaurant on the lower east side), the food was prepared (thanks to my dedicated and creative mother), and the guests were arriving – thanks to my incredible friends and supporters!

After an informative presentation from Tanya Navas, head of the Next Steps Education Program at Washington Irving, a division of The Union Square Partnership – I stepped up and thanked everybody for coming out and showing their support.

As many of you know – certainly those of you who heard me speak – this program has been a passion project of mine for quite some time. Inspired by the reality that my success and the fact that I am living my dream is because I was given the incredible opportunity to go to college on somebody else’s dime – a luxury I didn’t fully appreciate until recently – I decided to start a program that would give that same freedom to students who have the same potential but don’t have the same means. For most of the students entering Washington Irving High School in Union Square, college is not even on their radar, and not because education isn’t important but because they already believe it’s not an option. The battle for scholarships come senior year is daunting and unrealistic when they look around at the hundreds of other students they might be competing against, and that’s just at their school. STRIDE aims to change their perspective by offering students the opportunity to go to college at the freshman level.

So, thank you again, each of you who came and for those of you who couldn’t make it but sent a donation in support of this cause, it’s been an incredible beginning. And, an extra special thank you to my friends over at Hogan and Hartson, who without their tireless work I would be nowhere without – the lawyers are truly the people who facilitate groups like STRIDE being in existence! I look forward to a long and successful relationship with all of you going forward!
